The Sandoval County Sheriff's Posse has recognized rodeo as an important part of our community and cultural heritage since it organized its first one in 1970; this year will mark its 55th production.

The rodeo draws more than 1,000 spectators and nearly 200 contestants on each night. It has a reputation for being the best attended amateur rodeo in central New Mexico. While most spectators hail from the Santa Fe to Socorro corridor, others come from farther afield and seek out overnight stays and dining experiences that go beyond the Posse rodeo snack bar. This year the Posse plans to advertise in the Santa Fe market, targeting the thousands of out-of-staters attending Indian Market during the day and in search of local flavor at night.

The Posse rodeo is one of the few remaining “open” rodeos in New Mexico, meaning that cowboys and cowgirls do not have to belong to either an amateur or a pro rodeo association to compete. Youth events including mutton-bustin’, youth bulls and youth barrel racing present a rare opportunity for aspiring cowboys and cowgirls to gain experience. The nine open events include saddle bronc riding, ranch broncs, novice bulls, ladies breakaway, tie-down roping, team roping, chute dogging, open barrels, and open bull riding. Contestants routinely enter from throughout New Mexico, West Texas and southern Colorado — and in 2025, we aim to increase the purse in each event to draw even more.

Note that this spring, the Posse arena has been completely rehabilitated. The footing is now excellent for competitors and their horses; the arena was ripped to 2’ deep, leveled and fluffed.

Notes (applies to partnerships and sponsorships)

Contributions may be in cash or in-kind (e.g., supplying equipment, supplies and/or services required for the rodeo grounds improvement project, or necessary for the production of the rodeo).

In-kind contributions must be accompanied by invoice documentation of value (i.e, name of service, equipment, or supply; retail cost/unit (e.g. $/bale, $/hour, etc.), number of units provided, and reduction in cost/unit provided.

As a courtesy at your request, the Posse will coordinate the production of your banner if you provide the digital file with the art work and text by no later than July 1. You will be responsible for banner payment.
