If you live in Sandoval County, care about the well-being of your neighbors and your community, enjoy good fellowship and love good horses, joining the Posse might be right up your alley! Work mano a mano with your fellow Posse members and you’ll have a new group of fast friends before you know it. The best part? Whether you’re a guy or a gal, a 5th generation New Mexican or just got here from New York City, 21 years old or 88 years young, you belong. “Red or blue?” doesn’t matter – but “red or green?” does!
As a Posse member, you’ll have lots of opportunities for community service. Wrangle a couple hundred kiddos armed with baskets into the Posse arena for an Easter egg hunt. Fire up the grill and flip burgers and dogs for community meals at special events. In a band? Maybe y’all want to provide some entertainment at our community events. Rodeo your thing? There’s no limit to the possibilities here – work with silversmiths to get contestant buckles made, make sure there’s plenty of hay and grain onsite for the livestock athletes, lead the Grand Entry parade at the Posse’s annual rodeo, and so much more.
Handy with fixing things? Between the event hall, the arena and the grounds in general, there’s always something that needs doing -- a light fixture to be changed out, some spot-welding to be done, a paint brush to be picked up, or a pump to be replaced.
Phew! It sounds like a lot of work to dish up fun and entertainment for the community. Well, yes, it is – but when the work is done you can retreat to the members-only Posse bar for some R&R, because you’ve earned it! And there’s organized fun in store for you, too – like mostly monthly potluck suppers or cookouts to celebrate members’ birthdays.
And here’s more good news: being a Posse member isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition. You have options!
As an active (full) member, you attend the Posse’s monthly meetings and participate in volunteer activities, and pay annual dues. Some of our events require members to dress in the official Posse uniform: western boots (spurs optional); dark blue denim boot-cut jeans; a white snap shirt with an American flag patch on the right shoulder and the Sheriff’s Posse patch on the left; a Sheriff’s Posse badge (really, who didn’t want to be in a Posse as a kid?); a turquoise wild rag (aka scarf); and a silver belly western hat. Although you’re expected to have access to a horse and trailer, this requirement is interpreted pretty broadly so don’t let it hold you back.
Associate memberships are available to merchants, sponsors, and partners who support the Posse.
Last but not least, auxiliary members participate and assist in Posse events and/or in grounds maintenance or repairs (at least once every six months) and pay reduced annual dues.
Come on, admit it. You always wanted to be in a posse. So what are you waiting for? Join us!
